USSA Alpine Athlete Development Pipeline

One of the most exciting things about USSA racing is that USSA provides the pathway to racing on the U.S. Ski Team.  By joining USSA, you have put yourself on the track to potentially race on the World Cup or in the Olympics.  To help illustrate the progression from first putting on skis to racing on the U.S. Olympic team, USSA has created the alpine athlete development pipeline model.  This alpine athlete development pipeline was conceived through USSA’s close work with the U.S. Olympic Committee on the development of a high performance plan for alpine ski racers.  USSA competitions follow a progression up through the alpine athlete pipeline. This progression from youth and club racing to the top levels of competition can take many years, and the pipeline model illustrates the typical ages where each step forward is made.

National development projects are designed to create opportunities for top level athletes to train competitively with their peer group from across the nation.  At the next level down, regional and divisional development programs organized by the USSA Staff to offer top Central racers training opportunities that enhance and complement their home club training program.

The USSA Athlete development pipeline model provides a concise guide for parents and athletes to track the pathway to athletic success in alpine ski racing from the time of introduction to the sport to international prosperity.

All of these programs based on the pipeline model are designed to create a “seamless” transition from club racing to skiing on the national team.

Central Division training opportunities are posted here on the Central Website, listed on the forms page and on the Rocky/Central homepage.

Central Division Racing Program

The Central alpine program is designed to answer the needs of all levels of competitors throughout the division.  The typical competition progression for a Central athlete from their introduction to racing on to higher levels of competition is as follows.

YOUTH AND CLUB RACING: Athletes focus on skill development and race primarily in intraclub events or junior race leagues, such as WIJARA.

REGION RACING: Within each region of the Central Division, there are local scored and non-scored events for it’s local racers.  Each region hosts a number of events throughout the season.  Some are considered qualifiers to other events such as MidAm Series races or the J3/J4 Championship events.  For  information on region races in your area, please refer to your region manual or contact the Region Administrator.

MIDAMERICA SERIES RACING: Upper level FIS divisional competition.  Athletes must be J2’s or older to compete.  All racers must qualify into this series.  Results from this series are used to select Regional Junior Championship, NorAm, North American Junior Championship, and U.S. Alpine Championship teams.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS/REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Regional championship racing.  See ‘Out of Division Racing’ section..

NATIONAL FIS, NOR AMS, US ALPINE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Elite national racing.  Qualification is through FIS Racing and MidAm series competition.  See ‘Out of Division Racing’ section.

U.S. SKI TEAM: The selection criteria for the U.S. Ski Team is available from USSA Membership Services (435.647.2666) , on the USSA website - www.usskiteam.com, and additionally on the Central website- www.ussacentral.org.

USSA Central Membership

In order to compete in USSA Central, racers must register with USSA and with their local regions.  There are two membership payments.  One to USSA, and one to the local region.  There is no separate registration for the Central Division, just be sure to denote Central on your USSA membership form.  If you have not received registration materials from your local region, refer to the directory in the back of this book to find the number for your local region office.  You can now download some regions’ registration materials from the internet.  Their website addresses are also listed in the directory and on the first page of this rule book.

Take a moment now to check that you are properly registered to race in the Central Division.  Your USSA membership number shown on your USSA membership card should start with a “C”, meaning your division is Central.  If your USSA card says “non scored competitor” you have a student membership.  If your USSA card has a Y before your age class (ex. Y5) you have a youth membership.  If your USSA card has a J before your age class (ex. J3) then you have a competitor membership.  Athletes born in 1995 or later are eligible for USSA Youth membership. Youth members may compete in scored and non-scored events, but will not have a national point profile if he/she competes in a scored event(s).

Athletes competing regularly in Mid America series races should also obtain a FIS license. You must be 15 years of age before Dec. 31 to register with FIS. It is a requirement that you have a FIS number before you can compete in a FIS event.
